Asheesh Gupta, MD (PRESIDENT)
Dr. Gupta specializes in hip arthroscopy and sports medicine at the Nova Orthopedic & Spine Care division of The Centers in Woodbridge, Virginia. Dr. Gupta has gained hands-on experience in the sports medicine field through his fellowship with New York University Hospital for Joint Disease and his time with the New York Rangers, Chicago Sky and UIC Flames athletic program. In addition to his interest in sports medicine, Dr. Gupta specializes in hip arthroscopy and robotic assisted minimally-invasive total hip arthroplasty. In his spare time, Dr. Gupta enjoys staying active through soccer, tennis, running, biking and hiking.
Cassie G. Root, MD
Dr. Cassie Root is a Northern Virginia native and attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. After graduating from Princeton University with Honors, Dr. Root attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where she was awarded the prestigious, merit-based Canby Robinson Scholarship. In addition, she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Root completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York—frequently chosen as the #1 Hospital for Orthopedic Surgery by US News & World Report. Additional fellowship training to specialize in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular surgery was completed at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO. Dr. Root is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who focuses on problems of the upper extremity—the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. She treats disorders including sports injuries, arthritis, trauma, tendinitis and nerve problems. Welcoming both adult and pediatric patients, Dr. Root enjoys forming relationships with her patients while taking them through the entire process from initial diagnosis through conservative treatment, and when necessary, surgical treatment and post-operative therapy.
Clay Wellborn, MD
Dr. Clay Wellborn completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he lettered all four years in swimming. He obtained his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed his residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he was Chief Resident. After nearly 10 years in practice in Santa Barbara, California, he returned to the DC area in 2007. Dr. Wellborn has wide experience in arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and joint replacement. He enjoys spending time educating his patients so they can be active and informed participants in their treatment. He specializes in joint reconstruction of the hip, knee, and shoulder. He is trained in the modern techniques of minimally invasive, rapid recovery surgery, including outpatient joint replacement. Dr. Wellborn has worked with high school and college athletes for over 15 years as a team physician. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center from December 2016 until December 2020.
Cyrus M. Press MD
Dr. Press specializes in orthopaedic shoulder and elbow reconstructive surgery at the NoVa Orthopedic & Spine Care division in Woodbridge, VA. He joined the practice after completing his fellowship in Houston, TX at the Houston Health Science Center. Dr. Press utilizes the latest techniques in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and shoulder replacement. He has authored multiple papers on the treatment of shoulder injuries, total knee arthroplasty, and athletic sports and ankle injuries. He presented at national meetings on problems with rotator cuff repair and also serves as a reviewer of manuscripts for multiple orthopedic journals.
David Herzig, MD
Dr. Herzig double majored in Chemistry and Biochemistry at NC State University. He worked at St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital in Memphis prior to earning his MD from the University of Tennessee. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Georgetown in 2014, with subspecialty training in Minimally Invasive Spine and Neurointerventional Surgery.

Jaywon Rhee, MD
Jay Rhee M.D. is a board eligible Neurosurgeon, with comprehensive training in adult spine surgery. He has fellowship experience in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery, spinal deformity correction, as well as spinal oncology. His interests include but are not limited to, the treatment of degenerative disc disease, spinal deformities, brain and spine oncology, brain and spine stereotactic radiosurgery, cervical disc arthroplasty, and Chiari malformation.
Dr. Rhee graduated with honors in chemistry and history from Binghamton University. He completed his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His education continued on to Georgetown University Hospital where he completed his residency in neurological surgery as well as a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. In addition, he completed a junior instructorship at Johns Hopkins Hospital focusing on the treatment of complex spine pathology, spinal deformity, and spinal oncology.
Dr. Rhee has clinical research experience and is published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as neurosurgical textbooks. With his expertise, he teaches courses in spinal surgery to orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons alike. He holds membership in the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Matthew Buchanan, MD
Dr. Matthew Buchanan, Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon, completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Duke University, earning the Dean’s List Award. He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine where he was awarded the Department of Surgery Jonasson Prize for “Exceptional Performance and Dedication to Surgery”. Dr. Buchanan completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at West Virginia University where he was selected to serve as Chief Resident. He then went on to pursue further fellowship training in foot and ankle at the prestigious Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio where he assisted in the care of professional athletes.
Owolabi A. Shonuga, MD
Dr. Shonuga believes in individualized patient care, where each patient’s unique condition is treated in a personalized manner.
Dr. Shonuga specializes in Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery at NoVa Orthopaedic & Spine Care, a division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics. He obtained his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and graduated with honors after completing a research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. As an undergraduate, he attended Rutgers University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science. He completed general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency training at Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. As a chief resident, he was presented with the resident of the year award and was nominated to participate in the American Orthopaedic Association’s Emerging Leaders Program. After residency, he completed fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Rothman Institute/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Throughout his training, Dr. Shonuga has published multiple journal articles and book chapters on orthopaedic related conditions. He utilizes current concepts in the field to deliver evidence based care in a compassionate manner.
Paymaun M. Lotfi, MD
A native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Paymaun Lotfi specializes in Orthopaedic Surgery of the Spine at NoVa Orthopedic & Spine Care division in Woodbridge, Virginia. His areas of interest include cervical and lumbar spinal surgery utilizing the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Lotfi has been in practice since 2000 after he completed his fellowship training in spinal surgery at Northwestern University Hospital Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He has been an active member of the orthopaedic spinal trauma team at the Inova Fairfax Hospital and has served as chairman of the Orthopaedic Department at Sentara Northern VA Medical Center.
Ronald S. Paik, MD
Dr. Ronald Paik is a specialist in the shoulder, elbow, and knee and the field of orthopaedic sports medicine commonly treating sports related injuries. Dr. Paik is regularly selected as a top doctor in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine by the Washingtonian magazine, Northern Virginia magazine, Virginia Living magazine, Arlington magazine, and Castle Connolly/Modern Luxury DC magazine. Dr. Paik is commonly sought by patients for consultation and surgery from throughout the DC metro area, nation, and world.
A native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Ronald Paik graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was in the Echols Scholar Honors Program. He received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was selected as a National Institutes of Health Summer Research Fellow. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He went on to pursue further fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy focusing in shoulder, elbow, and knee surgery at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, which pioneered the Tommy John surgical procedure for baseball pitchers and is considered one of the pioneer institutions of sports medicine. He is board certified and received the subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Paik continues to be extensively involved in the fields of orthopaedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He serves as Co-Chair of the Self-Assessment Committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, which annually writes an examination to ensure orthopaedic sports medicine surgeons are staying up to date with current standards of care. He has been awarded the title of Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, which is bestowed upon an elite group who have set themselves apart through involvement, education, and advancement in the field of arthroscopic surgery. He serves as an Associate Master Instructor teaching arthroscopic techniques for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is on the Editorial Board for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, which has been ranked 4th out of 74 journals in the entire field of Orthopaedics. He is a Principal Reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and is a reviewer for Sports Health and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. He has previously served as a team physician for multiple professional and division I college sports teams. He continues to be involved in research, publishing multiple articles and technique videos.
Dr. Paik’s goal is to pursue non-operative treatments, when possible, but he is experienced in advanced arthroscopic procedures, surgical repair and reconstruction, and total joint replacements. Dr. Paik makes it a priority to ensure that his patients are well informed about their conditions and treatment options so that they can make educated decisions.
Warren Mackie-Jenkins, MD
Dr. Mackie-Jenkins is a dual Harvard-trained and board certified Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Management specialist.
Born and raised in Virginia, Dr. Mackie-Jenkins earned his undergraduate degree with distinction at the University of Virginia, where he was an Echols and Jefferson Scholar. After spending a year in Guatemala working in global health development, he returned to the United States and earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He is fluent in Spanish and has worked extensively in global health projects internationally.
Dr. Mackie-Jenkins completed his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, one of the nation’s top Hospitals and recognized as the leading fellowship program in Interventional Pain Medicine. He was fortunate to train under the top leaders in the field of Pain Medicine, and received extensive training in the latest interventional and surgical techniques for managing pain.
Wylie D. Lowery Jr., MD
Wylie D. Lowery Jr., M.D., specializes in sports medicine at the Nova Orthopedic & Spine Care Division of The Centers in Woodbridge, Virginia. His sports medicine experience extends to his work with elite athletes, Olympians, endurance equestrians, gymnasts and more. Dr. Lowery also serves on the United States Swimming Sports Medicine Committee. An active athlete himself, Dr. Lowery strives to help his patients maintain their active lifestyles.
